What Customers Say About Melissa & Doug Pattern Blocks and Boards:

He also likes "helping" me by handing me pieces I need for my board. Further, the reviewer independently selected this product to review and has no affiliation with the product maker/distributor, Amazon or the review requester). This is also a great toy when my friend comes over who has a 6 year old and a special needs 13 year old. I now have my own children and I focus on buying educational toys for my 3 year old. Easy to clean and store as it comes with a handy storage box.Disclosure Text:(The reviewer was compensated for posting this review.

It was in the preschool room where the children enjoyed it but it was also a hit with the after-school children. He enjoys sitting with me and doing the boards. He doesn't get frustrated if the pieces move a bit and I'm glad they are able to because it helps the child practice patience and careful fingers. However, the opinion stated in the review is that of the reviewer and the reviewer alone. I had first discovered this toy at a daycare center where I worked.

He received it this past Christmas and has played with it alot. Not many toys keep a 3, 6, and 13 year old busy doing the same thing. As all Melissa and Doug products are this is made of wood and is very durable.

That way she develops a sense of spatial geometry. All that is bonus though - the bottom line is she loves to play this. To make it slightly better for her, we take turns on placing the pieces and when its my turn, I readjust any pieces that moved during her turn. I think thats a good thing, because she's practicing to hold her hand steady and is increasing her patience. At first she was a little frustrated because the pieces moved around even when she was careful. My daughter who is little under 3 loves this toy. Later she overcame that and was more delicate in placing the pieces. However I do see how this toy can get a little frustrating for younger kids.Another variation we're trying is to not put the tiles on the board, but on the carpet instead while replicating the pattern.

When he gets it out he prides himself in arranging the boards/patterns around him so he can view his art. He is proud of himself when he names the right shapes and colors and counts the right number of each. My 3 year old got this for Christmas and loves it. He was having trouble with puzzles, but since he started with this something clicked within him and he has begun to understand the concept of smaller pieces coming together to make a larger picture.

You put one piece in, and the rest of them slide out of place. The pieces do not stay in place. So unless you are planning on getting rid of the picture boards, like one of the reviews recommends, try looking for something better. I usually love Melissa & Doug toys, but this puzzle was a little disappointing. Although, I love the concept and the educational value of it, it can be pretty frustrating. This puzzle would, probably, be better if the pieces were magnetic.

Guess you could put the pieces in a plastic baggie.otherwise they'll end up all over the place :P play with it, he finally figured out to match the shapes with the ones on the boards :) It was the perfect gift, turns out they were looking for one of these and just hadn't been able to find it in the stores. Bought these for my autistic nephew, who LOVES shapes. After watching the rest of the family (it was hit with everyone). Amazon to the rescue. The only downside is that the small pieces are loose, I was hoping maybe the boards would be a cover for the wooden box, but they are not.
